Local Mother’s Day Guide
May 5th, 2014
It's hard to repay our mothers as they've done so much for us. Fortunately, Mother's Day is coming up this Sunday and that gives us another moment to highlight our moms and show them how much they mean to us.
Go for a quick walk through the streets in Downtown Overland Park and you're bound to find something that you wouldn't stumble into anywhere else. There are great boutiques, fun gift shops, art galleries and restaurants galore. If you're still stuck thinking about getting the perfect gift, we've created a list of suggestions to help get you started and on your way:
1.) Plan a post-Mother's Day date
If you're planning on brunch or spending this Sunday together and recounting fun memories then you're heading in the right direction. Family time is quality time, but sometimes it's fun to have a gift that gets you back together for a little one on one time. Have you ever talked about doing a cooking class together? Consider signing Mom up for a cooking class at The Culinary Center of Kansas City. Is she a seamstress? Check out classes at Harper's Fabrics & Quilts and Quilted Memories.
And if you know Downtown OP well, you know there is a wide array of can't-miss spa services in the area where it's nearly impossible to not be perfectly relaxed.
2.) Make something personal
If only we could still make a handcrafted macaroni card and have it mean as much as it did when we were little kids. While those days have passed for you, let your kids get creative over at Kookiedoodle Crafts and make something that Mom will love.
Does she have anything that has been monogrammed? A monogram is a timeless, fun way to personalize any gift and you can find the perfect gift at The Monogram Shop.
3.) Food, treats, and repeat.
Most holidays are centered around food, and Mother's Day should be no different! Read this excellent write-up on food themed gifts in Downtown OP that was featured by Visit Kansas City, or check out the list of delicious restaurants and goodies in the area.
4.) Flowers
Flowers are a must. When the trees, flowers, and plants are bursting all around us, there's no more welcome way to greet Mom then by bringing in some flowers of her own. Go with quality local providers such as Craig Sole Designs and Dalton's Flowers who are some of the top florists in the metro area.
5.) Downtown OP gift cards
Downtown Overland Park has such an eclectic mix of fun, local shops that Mom will love to visit. Downtown gift cards are valid for over 50 businesses in the area.
Note: You can order your gift cards online, but order quickly if you want to ensure they arrive time! Otherwise, you can plan to stop by the Downtown Overland Park Partnership at 7315 W. 79th Street to pick one up.
