Earth Day 2017 | Clothing/Textile Recycling Event

April 22, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 2:00 pm

Saturday, April 22 | 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. | InterUrban ArtHouse

The U.S. EPA estimates that while the textile recycling industry recycles approximately 3.8 billion pounds of post-consumer textile waste each year, nearly 85% of post-consumer textile wastes still ends up in landfills each year. The EPA estimates that textile waste occupies nearly 5% of all landfill space.

This Earth Day, join Johnson County Recycles and Downtown Overland Park merchants as we do our part to reduce the amount of textile waste in area landfills. Clothing and textile recyclables will be collected and redistributed to non-profits, shelters and other charitable organizations around Kansas City to provide new life and purpose to items that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

Bring your clothing and textile recyclables to the drop-off point behind the future home of the InterUrban ArtHouse (8010 Conser Street/behind the Post Office) between 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22. Volunteers will help you unload your recyclables and sort them to determine where they can be re-used or re-purposed. Your textiles may find a new home at one of the following area organizations (more organizations to be announced soon):

Gently-used kid's jackets and coats will be sent to Growing Futures Early Education Center to be distributed to children in the program in need of warm items around the holiday season.

Textiles and fabrics will be re-purposed by the ladies of Stitching Change into pillowcases, re-usable bags and more. Stitching Change is a grassroots organization that helps refugee women empower themselves through the creation of sustainable income.

Welcome Back!

Downtown Overland Park businesses are now following Johnson County's plan to reopen. This will look different for each of our restaurants, retailers, and service providers, but we'll continue to share how you can support Downtown OP via our COVID-19 Resource. We're so grateful for this community, and we look forward to seeing you again in person soon.

SUPPORT NOW!

We will continue to provide updates via social media and our website, but for now, know that your friends in Downtown Overland Park are hard at work collaborating on best practices with our partners in the community.
