Downtown OP IDEA District

In November 2017, Mayor Carl Gerlach signed Resolution #4377 proclaiming Downtown Overland Park the Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship and Arts District (IDEA District) for the City of Overland Park. This resolution was signed in support of the ongoing work of the Downtown Overland Park Partnership board of directors, staff and volunteer Economic Development committee.

Downtown Overland Park is currently home to a high density of entrepreneurial, innovative and creative businesses and organizations; the ongoing recruitment and retention of these types of businesses will continue to provide a substantial economic impact on Downtown and the community at large. With this designation, Downtown Overland Park will continue to serve as a hub of creativity that reaches out to make connections throughout Overland Park, Johnson County and the greater metropolitan area.

The IDEA District designation streamlines efforts to develop a creative placemaking plan, strategic partnerships, artist live/work spaces, public art design and placement, dynamic community events, clear signage and wayfinding, coordinated marketing, sustainability features, transportation hubs and entrepreneurial programming.

Please note, this is not a re-brand of Downtown Overland Park; the IDEA District will provide opportunities for additional grant resources, cohesive planning for the future look and feel of the area and an increase in entrepreneurial programming in support of locally-owned businesses in the efforts to continue the growth of Downtown Overland Park, a unique community asset.

Coronavirus Update

Based on the 30-day shelter-in-place order, we have decided to postpone all of our events and programming for the next four weeks (through 04/23).

We will continue to provide updates via social media and our website, but for now, know that your friends in Downtown Overland Park are hard at work collaborating on best practices with our partners in the community.

Keep in mind, many DOP businesses are keeping their doors open, and they depend on YOU for support. If you are well, consider grabbing your lunch to-go from a local restaurant. Or, shop online at your favorite downtown retailer. The Downtown Overland Park neighborhood is known for its strong sense of community. Let’s flex those kind muscles and lift each other up in this time of need.
